South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI)
SAHMRI was the first project completed in Adelaide’s world-class Health and Biomedical precinct; the largest precinct of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. SAHMRI was designed to accommodate a team of more than 600 local and international researchers working together in state-of-the-art facilities to discover better treatments and cures for some of humanity’s most challenging diseases.
Cundall provided sustainable design advice and LEED consultancy services from schematic design phases and digital modelling through to commissioning and handover. We co-designed, benchmarked and quantified key initiatives to ensure a high-performance facility including the innovative solar-shaded diagrid building envelope, passively designed floor plates that maximise natural light penetration, and optimised façade orientation.
"This project involved taking a systematic and whole-of-life approach to understanding building performance and reducing operational environmental impacts. Targeting and achieving the LEED Gold rating also elevated the human dimension of wellbeing and occupant comfort to world-class standards – giving SAHMRI additional credentials in attracting the best and brightest global researchers." Lewis Hewton, Principal Consultant.
Localising global standards for Australian conditions is an opportunity to innovate in creating high-performance specialist research facilities.
