The proposed new data centre in the Greater Manchester borough of Stockport represents an investment of £350 million. Once operational in 2026, it will become the largest facility in Northern England. The centre will have the capacity for over 4,000 racks, all of which will be powered by 100% certified renewable energy.

Kao appointed Cundall to assess the feasibility of construction of a new 40MW data centre on an existing constrained industrial site. This involved reviewing different system approaches and plant configurations which required close collaboration between the mechanical, electrical, and acoustics teams. The proposed solutions addressed potential site concerns including logistics for initial installation and subsequent phases, and constraints imposed by the adjoining properties while providing efficient solutions delivering the required levels of resilience.

The data centre follows Kao Data’s award-winning high-performance design efficiency and sustainability ethos. Cundall’s input allowed the client team to make informed decisions about the overall viability of the site and to proceed with the full design to deliver a modern data centre in a new location.
