This new housing development in Killeens, Co. Wexford envisages a development of 63 homes in a mix of one, two and three bed units alongside ancillary facilities and landscaped spaces which overlook the recently opened Min Ryan Park. The ‘Greenfield’ site measures 15,900m2 in area with the land falling by approximately 5.5 m from a high point at its south-western end to a low point at its north-eastern boundary.

As a design team, Cundall investigated many different forms of structure and tested them from a cost, buildability, sustainability and durability perspective. Initial site investigations highlighted a weak stratum of sand below a relatively stiff upper stratum. The geotechnical team assessed the investigation results and designed a ground improvement scheme utilising vibro stone columns under foundations throughout. The building services team also analysed the energy and comfort criteria which the development addressed for its requirements, in terms of envelope performance, MEP system specification and renewable energy.

“The principle objectives are to provide a high-quality housing development with some supporting ancillary facilities and all associated site works. We worked alongside the architects to simplify the layouts for efficient structural design in blockwork and precast slabs, and proposed alternative substructure design strategy, including ground improvement works, to provide a more cost effective and sustainable solution than piled foundations.” Hannah Brooker, Senior Engineer.
