Imjin Barracks is the first project of the wider £1.2 bn Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) Army’s Single Living Accommodation Programme (SLA) procured under the ECAM framework. The project, completed in summer 2023, provides 69 new single en-suite bedspaces, along with communal living and kitchen/diner facilities to enhance the lived experience.

Cundall was appointed by Arcadis to provide multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy for this major infrastructure works project.

The new SLA block is an off-site modular project featuring a high-spec interior fit-out, central break-out spaces and increased natural daylight into rooms. The building will use smart building technology to react to external environments and user behaviours to reduce energy consumption. Our structural team undertook a detailed structural options appraisal to determine the most appropriate structural form in terms of embodied carbon, cost, and programme. Our options appraisal was key to approaching the most appropriate modular suppliers for the project.

Alister Philip, Principal engineer said ‘The programme’s purposed is to enhance the communal living space for staff and provide facilities that suit their needs. Communication with the client and design team was key to understand the Army’s and staff requirements. Only through that were we able to create a flexible design that will work across the whole programme.’

Key fact

It has achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating under the Defence Related Environmental Assessment Methodology (DREAM).

Imjin Barracks set the pace for DIO’s SLA programme. We are working closely with the defence sector to support them on their net zero carbon journey and these programmes play a pivotal role. By investing in sustainable, modern methods of construction we are not only providing enhanced living, working and training environments for staff but we are also future proofing them.
