Located south-east of the New Bailey site in Salford, this distinctive, 12-storey building provides 293,000ft² of commercial office space, with retail space on the ground floor. The latest building to be added to the New Bailey Masterplan features a structural diagrid frame, and will serve as a gateway building to the development.
Drawing on the area’s rich industrial heritage, particularly the Irwell Street bridge, the structure features a steel frame with composite cellular beams and a metal deck floor slab at each floor level. Centrally located reinforced concrete cores provide stability and vertical circulation. The steel frame is also expressed externally through the façade design, creating a unique visual identity that will establish the building as a new landmark.
Clare Dawson, Principal Structural Engineer, said “It was a privilege to work on a fantastic scheme. There were some unique challenges presented by the diagrid frame, and the project would not have been successful without true collaboration between Cundall’s structural team, the architect and steelwork fabricator.”
Whilst there was no specific target on embodied carbon for this scheme, we managed to save approximately 400 metric tonnes. We endeavoured to review and assess options at all stages of the design in terms of their embodied carbon output in order to minimise our impact, providing efficient and cost-effective solutions and reducing frame costs.
