Centre Court Lower Bowl Works

2022 marks the centenary of the Centre Court. To commemorate this occasion, Cundall worked on upgrades to the court perimeter, specifically drainage updates, installation of dedicated and easily accessible service routes with much-improved aesthetics, and the extension of the existing parapet wall and squaring of the court corners. The changes mean that players can enter the court centrally, improving the aesthetics pre and post-match and particularly for the trophy presentations.

The main difficulty was making sense of an existing 100-year-old structure which has been heavily modified over time with very little supporting record information. This required careful survey work to validate assumptions without causing any lasting damage. It was vital that any new works matched the feel and character of the existing such that they blend in seamlessly, and that the services provision accommodate the complex and overlapping requirements of the club and broadcasters needed to deliver the Championships.

David Rivers stated, “Close and timely coordination was needed throughout the tight build programme to ensure construction ran to schedule, given any delays risked jeopardizing the Championships. Despite additional complexities imposed by Covid and supply issues, the project was completed on time and ready for the centenary celebrations.”
