Brooke Street Pier
This project recreates the former Brooke Street Pier with a modern and innovative floating terminal for use by ferries and cruise ships to service facilities such as MONA and Peppermint Bay. This new waterside tourist and transport hub encompasses ticketing, cafes, restaurants, boutique retail, office and waiting spaces that offer the visitor a unique interface between land and water operations.
The three levels above the concrete pontoon have a building form that is sympathetic to the surrounding heritage buildings in Hobart’s Sullivan’s Cove. It is also bound by a transparent / translucent external façade which comprises of a combination of externally shaded glazing and clear / nanogel-filled polycarbonate sheeting that offers extremely high thermal and solar control properties.
Caimin McCabe said "The building is designed to adopt a ‘mixed mode’ approach to comfort control so that it can be naturally ventilated when conditions are suitable, taking advantage of the prevailing climate. The air conditioning system gets its heating and cooling demands using seawater heat exchange".
Integrated design solution that marries environmental performance, innovative design and transformative architecture to create a community asset on Hobart’s waterfront.
