Muthvel Nandakumaran

As a registered electrical engineer (i.e. Professional Engineer, Electrical), I have a particular interest in the design and construction of critical power systems, low energy sustainable buildings, the use of alternative energy sources, high-voltage power and building energy management systems. My career has enabled me to work on an extraordinary range of projects that have contributed to society through providing the energy, power, data, communications and building systems that support our modern way of life.

Applying creativity can deliver immense results. For example, in the electrical sector, systems have often been over-designed. This wastes resources including copper. I developed design optimisation in long distance cabling that significantly reduces wastage of cables and resources. I would like to build a framework for measuring cable usage per kW that enables us to save copper - also saving clients’ money

Two of the most valuable pieces of wisdom I have learned are have the approach of “do it right the first time” and “correct immediately if you see a mistake”. Excellence requires vigilance to always check our work, as so much is (sometimes literally) riding on our design and delivery.
