Earlier this year, Cundall’s WELL certified Birmingham office hosted industry leaders to discuss the future of workplaces.

As our way of work has changed rapidly over the past year, so must workspaces. With an increase in people working from home, the need for massive office spaces has become redundant. The roundtable not only discussed the new way of working but also focused in on the need to cater to the taste of a new generation.

Alec Stewart, building service partner at Cundall, commenteds:

“With regards to Birmingham, the West Midlands Combined Authority set a climate emergency back in 2019 and the next decade will be a pivotal and decisive period in our move towards net 0 carbon. in the city.”

The event welcomed Dr. Mathew Jones of Birmingham City University, Alec Stewart from Cundall, Rob Valentine from Bruntwood Works, Lisa Deering from Glanecy Nicholls, Phil Crowther from Willmott Dixon, Peter Jenks from Thamesis and Trevor Ivory from DLA Piper.

With a focus on Birmingham City Council’s Our Future City Plan that will provide a guide of the city’s development until 2040, it is no doubt that Birmingham is growing rapidly. This implies that workplaces must also keep up with such changes. The panellists voiced a range of opinions and knowledge sharing their experiences with the built environment in Birmingham.

Host Phil Crowther recognises the potential of what Birmingham has to offer and comments:

“We’ve got to be brave. That’s the big step. Birmingham is so lucky to have the HS2 high speed train line coming, and that is a real opportunity to maximise the offer and really give people the workspaces they want.”
