Cundall’s Cross Street Exchange recognised at the IStructE Singapore Structural Awards 2024

Asia 21 十月 2024

We are delighted by the recognition of Cundall’s Cross Street Exchange project, which has been awarded a Commendation under the "Zero Carbon Ambition" Structures category at the IStructE Singapore Structural Awards 2024.
Launched in 2010, this award celebrates excellence and innovation in structural engineering, recognising both outstanding projects and our industry’s talented structural design engineers.

The Cross Street Exchange is a mixed-use retrofitting project comprising a 15-storey office tower; a 4-storey podium; and the repurposing and conservation of shophouses—an important aspect of Singapore’s architectural heritage. As the lead consultant, Cundall has been providing multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy services, including structural engineering, building services engineering, sustainability advisory, lighting design, acoustics, IT/AV, security, and vertical transportation consultancy.

The project aims to enhance and update the existing building with improved layout, new additional amenities, and enhanced exterior aesthetics that harmonise with the surrounding conservation shophouses. In addition, the building’s systems and services have been upgraded to support the net-zero carbon agenda.

To retain and reuse as much of the building’s existing structure as possible and reduce new embodied carbon, our team developed a parametric design tool to assess the utilisation ratio of the existing piles. The tool was instrumental for the project as it allows the team to provide the most efficient and economical decisions to the architects and client.

For example, it helped with utilising areas with higher pile capacity and avoid overloading on piles with lower capacity. As a result, there is a significant reduction in the need to construct new foundations, which can be both costly and carbon-intensive.

“It’s truly an honour to take home this award at the IStructE Singapore Structural Awards Ceremony,” Marcus Kan, Managing Director of Cundall’s Singapore office, said.

“This win is particularly meaningful to Cundall as it strengthens our commitment to net-zero carbon and creating a more sustainable built environment in Singapore. We want to thank IStructE Singapore Regional Group for recognising our efforts on this project.”

Dr. Chaoming Yu, project lead of the Cross Street Exchange, added, “Given the complexity of this project, it has been a valuable experience for the team. Through collaboration with the architect, Benoy and DCA — we successfully delivered the Cross Street Exchange while fulfilling PAG’s requirements.”

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees; we look forward to seeing more exceptional structural designs in the future. If you would like to know more details about the Cross Street Exchange, please get in touch.
