With some major policy proposals on the horizon likely to escalate the drive towards reducing embodied carbon and increasing social value in projects, there is a natural turn leading to the advanced adoption of large-scale refurbishment and increased use of renewable construction materials.
Our October Breakfast Briefing in London, hosted by Frances Brown, Partner, will explore potential legislative changes that could ultimately lead to a step-change in building design. Project examples will showcase how refurbishment and the use of timber can add major value to projects while aligning with net zero targets and not acting as a limit on creativity.
Dr. Elisabeth Marlow, Principal Consultant and Vice President for IStructE's UK & Europe Region, will start the session by discussing the current legislative situation, including possible changes in the near future that could have a major bearing on developers and the wider industry.
David Rivers, Partner, will then discuss refurbishment projects, presenting examples demonstrating how significantly existing buildings can be revamped and repurposed with a bit of imagination.
Finally, Andrew Weddell, Associate Director, will talk about using timber in building design, sharing lessons learnt from previous projects and highlighting the possibilities timber can bring.
