South Kesteven District Council required two of their existing passenger lifts to be replaced in their Grantham social housing development. The existing lifts were replaced within the original building constraints whilst the properties remained occupied and aimed to provide reliable transportation to residents for years to come.

Our vertical transportation team provided the initial survey for the site. Based on this, they made multiple recommendations such as full lift design, coordination of the contractor design and an examination of the finished lifts to ensure compliance with the original specification. The new lifts reduced the embodied carbon of the project by retaining some of the original lift elements, as well as reducing their energy consumption and increasing accessibility facilities on site.

By replacing the lifts within the constraints of the existing building, the impact on building residents was significantly reduced due to there being no major structural modifications required to the building. This would have extended the time during which residents were without a lift and increased disruption through noise. Due to the buildings only having one lift, keeping the duration of the work as short as possible was key. This approach reduced costs as well as disruption.
