Cundall was appointed for delivering building services, civil & structural engineering, fire strategy and acoustics services for the new secondary school with student accommodation in Foshan, China.
The site is formed of five accommodation blocks for pupils and teachers, the main school building, a 300 seat theatre, 25m swimming pool, an enclosed 4-court sport facility and external 400m running track. The total development area is 47,000m2. The school can accommodate up to 875 pupils.
The whole site is raised to prevent a risk of flooding, and car park and loading bay areas are provided below the school site.
Working closely with Scott Brownrigg, LEH UK, the Hong Kong based school operator, the concept was to design a secure, adaptable and sustainable urban campus.
Challenges encountered at the site pushed the design team to seek innovative solutions for keeping the buildings highly sustainable, counter the poor air quality and noise impact of a nearby highway and keep the school safe in a seismic region.
Use of biophilia, filtered air and water, and well designed facades improved the Health and Wellbeing of the occupants.
A Stage 3 design was developed with Scott Bronwrigg which was then handed over to Local Design Institute for technical design and building regulation approval.
