Our team provided multi-disciplinary engineering design services for the construction of this new two-storey, net zero carbon building. This wellbeing workplace caters for 70+ staff and represents the unique culture and energy of Rare, drawing inspiration from regional architecture. The ambition for the new development building, known by the team at Rare as the “Barns”, was to create a sustainable, generous and creative workspace whilst overlaying the latest technology and workspace thinking.

The building is split across three bays to read as adjacent ‘barns’, and the expressed timber structure is articulated to celebrate the craft of the construction. The proportions and massing of the initial architectural proposals, and the setting within the campus, lent itself to timber for the primary structure, as well as the cladding. The internal space was designed to consider neurodivergent users, providing acoustic and visual privacy and controlled lighting.

Andy Weddell, Associate Director, commented “I am very proud that our initial concept for a timber-framed building aligned so well with Rare’s aspirations for the space. Through collaboration with the whole team, we achieved a net zero carbon building that reflects their unique culture. With features, including natural materials, promoting well-being and sustainability, we ensured a space that celebrates craftsmanship and community, and delivered Rare's vision for a sustainable, creative and inclusive workspace.”
