We are pleased to announce that earlier this month, Sandhurst Band Practice Facility was awarded Project of the Year at the Structural Timber Awards, going on to claim the Winner of Winners award before the night’s end.
Formerly historical stables and offices, this project combines cutting-edge modern refurbishment with military heritage to create an efficient space that boasts a range of renewable technologies. Defining features of the project are the ultra-low carbon cross-laminated timber (CLT) and hybrid wide-span steel portal frame, showcasing the availability of sustainable, carbon-conscious solutions for the defence sector and meeting the Ministry of Defence’s 55 kWh/m² energy requirement.
This purpose-built facility can be found at the heart of Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, providing the British Army Band flexible, acoustically optimised spaces for performances. Our team supported client to produce the Developed Design from a multi-disciplinary level, with our engineers leading on building services, structural and civil engineering, sustainability, acoustics, air quality and transportation consultancy. The judges of the Structural Timber Awards made particular note of the successful integration of sustainable cross laminated timber, high acoustic performance, and skilful blend of historical and contemporary architecture.
Keith Richardson, Defence Sector Lead, comments “Cundall’s developed design pushed the boundaries of sustainable technology in line with the User Requirement Document (URD) to create an exemplar design and achieve DREAM Excellent for the survey stage submission. This included technology such as photovoltaic, rainwater harvesting, heat pumps, heat recovery and intelligent controls including daylight dimming. This project is a brilliant accomplishment for our defence team and a sign of what can be achieved when working closely with the client to incorporate sustainability technology early in the design.”
A huge congratulations to everyone involved with the project for your brilliant achievement!
