Australia 30 July 2024

Cundall’s Head of Building Performance Services in APAC, Mathuran Marianayagam, and Adelaide office lead, Lewis Hewton, have been recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia as the 2024 Green Star Champions.

The GBCA Green Star Champion Award recognises the vision, passion, and commitment of industry leaders who have made great contributions to delivering a more sustainable built environment through the Green Start certification program. The Green Star Champions are also ambassadors who demonstrate excellence in transforming the Australian built environment.

Lewis Hewton, Adelaide office lead, has been making influential sustainable changes in the built environment by delivering sustainable design solutions with a focus on energy efficiency. In addition, he has been successfully helping his clients in various sectors, such as education, government, defence, and healthcare, to realise their sustainability aspirations using the whole-of-life approach to sustainability from conception to completion of projects.

Mathuran Marianayagam, Head of Building Performance Services in APAC, on the other hand, has taken another sustainable approach to improving existing buildings to empower portfolio owners and investors including Centuria Capital, Vicinity Centres, ISPT, Pro-invest, Compass Group, Savills Investment Management to achieve their net zero carbon goals. Through Mathuran’s projects, he has been providing practical strategies to his clients in reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, developing asset electrification strategies, as well as developing net zero and decarbonisation pathways at the asset and portfolio scale.

“I see this recognition as an opportunity to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring others in the industry,” said Mathuran.

“The challenge of climate change is real, and we all have a role to play. Green buildings are not just an optional extra but an essential part of our solution, and we need to continue to ensure every existing building is brought along on the decarbonisation journey,” he adds.

Lewis also commented, “It's about ensuring our built environment is not just better for us but also for generations to come."

“This award not only highlights Cundall’s commitment to sustainability but also the collective efforts of the outstanding team both Mathuran and I work with. The recognition underscores the importance of our shared vision for a more sustainable future in the built environment.”
