Digital material passports - British Terrazzo

Maconda source local aggregates by upcycling construction waste and binding it with cement to create Ethical Stone Terrazzo.

Each of these terrazzo’s tells a story about a place in Britain. As opposed to Portland Cement (which is traditionally used to bind aggregates together), a low-carbon alternative is used. Alkali-Activated Cementitious Material (AACM), a by-product of the steel industry is used instead which reduces the product’s reliance on Portland Cement by 50%.

All materials are sourced within the UK alongside manufacturing the tiles in Manchester. Therefore, every effort has been made to minimise the carbon footprint of the tiles by lowering transport emissions.

What is a digital material passport?

A material passport is a digital document listing all the materials that are included in a product or construction during its life cycle in order to facilitate circularity decisions in supply chain management at the end of the building life.

At Cundall, we want to create a passport to materials/products that will also provide information before its use so designers and contractors are capable of making conscious decisions of products that could affect the embodied carbon and health well-being of a project, facilitating the inclusion of the best low carbon and/ healthy materials that align with their design.
