The phased redevelopment of intu Eldon Square Scheme 4 has been over the last 2 years, and has transformed this major shopping centre from a dated 1970’s development to new and vibrant malls enhancing the experience of shoppers and retailers.

The 5,000m2 redevelopment included the replacement of 35 year old services within the ceilings, new lighting, fire alarms and other system in the malls, along with a new innovative (landmark) entrance on Northumberland Street. Keeping retailers happy and trading at all times has been a key goal throughout the project.

Northumberland Street Entrance
This iconic Northumberland Street entrance removed the first floor to create a double height entrance mall. To further enhance the space the roof was partially cut back and a dramatic cantilever ETFE canopy structure was added which over sails the entrance and creates a triple height entrance.

Chevy Chase and Northumberland Square – Roof replacement and features
Replacement of the roof to these two focal points in the centre created an opportunity to transform them into dramatic and memorable spaces. To achieve this, new structure was threaded in to the existing spaces which was further designed to support ceiling/lighting features that compliment these spaces.

Mall refurbishment
The ceiling formed the greater part of the refurbishment and as such has made the largest contribution to re-establishing a new identity for the centre. The old ceilings were dark and generally not well lit so there was a desire to raise the ceiling height and to light the ceiling plane creating the feeling of more space.

The building was original built in the 1970’s so most of the services were over 35 years old. We tested the existing services in the ceilings for compliance and then replaced with new services including lighting, fire alarms, fire system, fire curtains, Wi-Fi and CCTV which were designed and checked to British Standards.
