Cundall was appointed as BEAM Plus and sustainability consultancy for the design and build of a new Yau Ma Tei Police Station in Hong Kong.
The new Yau Ma Tei Police Station has a strong focus on sustainability and passive design. The project has achieved thorough passive design integration. The building form provides more window access, daylight, and natural ventilation, whilst also consuming less energy through efficient Passive and MEP system design.
Cundall provided valuable input to the project team during the competitive tender stage to differentiate the design from other proposals, resulting in the project team winning the submission.
The project has achieved high-level passive design integration. Multiple design iterations were analysed with the project architect to optimise the building form in order to reduce unwanted solar gain, whilst maximising natural ventilation and day-lighting opportunities. This has been realised by having a north–south facing building form, shallow floor-plates surrounding an atrium for cross ventilation, and shifting building cores to west and east wings of the building.
The optimised building form provides a solid foundation for the building to maximize the potential of many advanced MEP services design features. These include mixed mode ventilation, daylight-responsive lighting control, task lighting, oil-free chillers, solar hot water and rainwater harvesting systems.
With all the sustainability design elements integrated in the design, the project has achieved BEAM Plus Gold Rating.
