Ulster Hospital is one of the major acute hospitals serving the Belfast area. The building stock was subject to a refurbishment and new build program to make it suitable for future health care provision in Northern Ireland.

The outline brief for phase B of the redevelopment was to link together the buildings constructed under phase A, as well as to provide: emergency, radiology, AHP, outpatients, assessment wards, HDU/ITU wards, pharmacy, kitchen/dining, mortuary, in patient wards (20), paediatrics and laundry. Five day theatres in the facility were designed to full theatre standards, to be used in the event of failure of the adjacent Critical Care Unit theatres.

Vertical transportation was provided in the form of bed lifts, facilities management lifts, and passenger lifts. All to the exactly HTM requirements and incorporating features such as firefighting lift, evacuation lifts, and crash call.
