Cundall has provided the civil and structural engineering, as well as acoustics for the U-Student development in Newcastle upon Tyne. The site officially opened in September 2014 for the beginning of the educational year. The development also includes communal living areas, offices and a launderette.
The site provides approximately 400 en-suite student bedrooms, in 5 to 9-storey blocks on the former site of the Tyne Tees TV studio. The accommodation is a mixture of en-suite bedrooms, studio and individual apartments.
The site slopes down to the river therefore in order to work with the existing levels and minimize retaining walks, a stepped floor solution was selected. Liaison with the local highways department was also required because one retaining wall provides support to the adjacent roadway.
A modular pre-cast concrete superstructure solution was chosen to suit the repetitive floor layouts. Cundall designed the podium areas for plant and conference/entertainment spaces where larger open areas were required.
The acoustics team provided acoustic advice on the proposed constructions and details for separating social and sleeping areas.
Cundall has been appointed by University Partnerships Programme as part of the design team for a student accommodation scheme in central London. The two year construction programme commenced on site in summer 2014.
Salford University student residential project is a new 1,350 bed project located at the Peel Park campus which is 3km west of Manchester city centre. Cundall provided acoustic, civil, structural and geotechnical engineering services for this new build project.
Cundall provided concept ESD consultancy services for this exciting new 400+ room student accommodation development in the heart of Sydney designed to meet best practice sustainable design standards.
