The Tuned In! Centre is a facility for young people, which has a recording studio, dance studio, media suite, performance hall and an advice facility. Cundall was appointed to provide engineering design services to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ facility. The facility can be accessed by young people in the area aged 11 to 18 years old. The Tuned In @ myplace building is built on a ‘brown field’ site, in an area known as the Coatham Enclosure.
The design was informed by the tastes and opinions of local young people. Engaging them encouraged a sense of ownership and respect for the facility and created a facility they truly wanted. Working with them, we specified the lighting design to fit both the buildings requirements and the local people’s requirements. The building frontage faces the North Sea and the site is immediately adjacent to the Promenade. The building has been arranged over 2-storeys in order to optimise the building foot print and to maximise the landscaped areas that can be used for outdoor activities. The form of the building was developed to respond to the prevailing site conditions and includes features such as air intakes protected from the effects of windblown sand.
The design of the new building and its engineering services minimise the facilities demands on thermal and electrical energy.
Overall the integration of these innovative and sustainable measures has proved successful in a building which enjoyed by both occupants and operators.
The relocation of diverse elements of Central St Martins College of Art and Design (CSM) into a new central campus on the 61 acre Kings Cross goods yard redevelopment was a major undertaking for the college and university.
