The Lowry is one of the renowned arts and theatre facilities in Salford, Manchester. Set in a magnificent waterside location opposite Media City in Salford Quays. The Lowry is an architectural flagship with a unique and dynamic identity. Rising from the regenerated docklands, it is a welcoming building, designed to reflect the surrounding landscapes and flourishing waterways, in its glass and metallic surfaces.
£3m Pier Eight Restaurant and Bar is part of an ongoing £5m investment programme to improve facilities and reduce the environmental footprint of the 15 year old complex. Working closely with the Manchester architect Leach Rhodes Walker and interior designer Koncept, the restaurant was redesigned into an open and inviting social space overlooking the Quays and waterside canal on the North Bay with the Imperial War Museum in the background.
Cundall provided lighting design services for the redevelopment bar and restaurant area which was completed in just twelve weeks. Two under-used outdoor terraces were transformed into a new indoor wing for the restaurant, open plan kitchen, flexible restaurant area for private events.
The lighting design was developed for the individual areas within the refurbishment zone; restaurant & bar, kitchen, external entrance and external façade. The internal lighting concept took inspiration from the surrounding Quays side.
The bar area incorporated bespoke back lit lighting, track mounted down-lighting with narrow beam optics were used within the slat ceiling structure creating a warm and sensual lighting installation.
