After continued use, this famous London landmark wanted refurbishment, improved links to the adjoining Madame Tussauds exhibition, and an overhaul of life safety systems, such as fire alarm and centralised emergency lights.
As London’s most visited tourist venue, minimal disruption was essential. Factors such as the theatrical smoke emanating from the Chamber of Horrors presented unique challenges to the design of ventilation and fire alarm systems. Cundall’s solutions included air conditioning ductwork between the copper clad concrete dome and the new internal projection surface; plus carbon dioxide control of fresh air supply dampers to save energy while ensuring occupant comfort.
The main auditorium was equipped with a new Digistar projector and inner dome projection screen. Particular challenges were presented in integrating a new air conditioning system and environmental treatment of crowd holding areas.
A new entrance and dedicated lift to the Planetarium has also provided better circulation between the Planetarium and the Madame Tussauds exhibition. The project was completed on schedule in only twenty weeks, with Madame Tussauds operational throughout.
Eden Court is the largest arts centre in Scotland. Its redevelopment increased the capacity of the main auditorium, established a second smaller theatre and included two new cinemas. Other elements included better landscaping and upgrading of the historic Bishop’s Palace.
Originally a newspaper print works, One Aldwych occupies a prime location at the junction of Aldwych and the Strand in central London.
Cundall provided building services for the refurbishment on this heritage-listed former power station on the banks of the Brisbane River.
