The King’s Hospital School is regarded as one of Ireland’s leading boarding schools and facilities for those living away from home.

As part of our ongoing engineering works on this live Educational Campus, we have been appointed to provide building services to aid the design of the homely atmosphere desired for students while offering a comfortable, healthy and inclusive environment.

The new self-contained units of five, four and two-person bedrooms provide the privacy and flexibility the students require.

The refurbishment was undertaken while the building remained “live” and partially occupied meaning our design philosophically had to take this into account. We coordinated with multiple stakeholders including the client and the design team and advised that the works should be undertaken over four phases with students being temporally moved while the works were carried out. This created a tight programme of works to allow the facilities to be fully operational for the summer period. This phased approach meant that close collaboration was needed with project stakeholders to produce a plan that suited all disciplines. The project was completed on time and budget.

To make the scheme more energy efficient, a low energy variable volume ventilation system has been designed and installed as well as LED lighting (including emergency lighting) throughout the scheme. Not only have these methods made the building more energy efficient, it has also saved the client money and has cut the need for high maintenance costs.
