Cundall was appointed by the client to carry out full design services from RIBA Stage 4 onwards for the proposed restoration of the existing Grade II listed building, various internal alterations, single storey extension to the side and two storey extension to the rear of the existing building.

The extensions increase the available floor space in the building from 872m2 to 1169m2 and broadly provides improved facilities for the existing use as a theatre and a new multi-use space to prolong the life of the building and act as a multi-purpose facility for the local community.

The two-storey extension comprises of a hybrid of load bearing masonry/steel frame supporting a timber floor and timber roof all supported on a reinforced concrete retaining wall integral with a reinforced concrete floor slab in the basement. The single storey extension comprises of a braced steel frame supporting a flat roof and providing an open plan multi-space area as part of the client’s brief.

Internal re-configuration of the existing listed building involved design and specification of underpinning to some of the existing walls towards the rear of the building to lower the existing basement slab to improve the headroom. Other improvements were also added to including access to the previously empty roof voids which are now being used to hide some of the M&E plant, various new openings in the walls and floors, checking of existing timber members to support additional loads from various kits associated with the proposed upgraded theatre facilities.
