Cundall was responsible for the structural and civil design of a new multi-use lifestyle centre that replaced an outdated leisure centre.

Our geotechnical team also led the ground investigations for the site and provided valuable input into possible foundation solutions as well as reviewing viability of soakaways for the drainage system and checks on safe contamination levels in the soils.

Comprising of a 25m 10-lane competition pool, learner pool, children’s confidence water pool, fitness suite, gym, climbing wall, health spa and public café, the centre provides the modernised facilities needed by the local community against the setting of the Verulamium Park and St Albans Cathedral.

The new building and facilities were to be located in a more prominent and sensitive location on the site, which provided considerable aesthetic challenges for the architect and design teams to solve, especially given the adjoining historic cathedral and public park. The strict planning conditions meant that many existing trees in the development area were to be maintained which gave considerable challenges to the substructure and drainage designs.

The site was challenging due to the proximity of the park, the drinking water pumping station within 50m of the site, and the heavy industry surrounding the site. The existing leisure centre, theatre and public parking also all had to remain operational during construction. The existing centre was demolished after completion of the new centre building and the existing building area converted into car parking for the new leisure centre with extensive hard & soft landscaping surrounding the new building and parking areas.

The centre was opened November 2012 and surrounding car parks were completed in April 2013.
