A Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project for South Tyneside Council and Gateshead Borough Council to replace/upgrade the existing schools in the area. All projects have been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ and above, incorporating a number of sustainable features, including: rain water harvesting, biomass boilers, maximization of natural ventilation and maximization of daylight penetration.

Cundall provided multidisciplinary services for the first wave of this scheme, which included:

  • Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre: a new build healthcare facility providing GP surgeries, minor operation facilities, library and community facilities
  • Harton Primary School: a new 630 place primary school and nursery built on the site of an existing school
  • Jarrow School: a new build school for 11-16 year olds with a specialism in engineering plus a 60 place autism unit
  • Harton Technology College: the redevelopment of an existing 1930’s building to provide specialist teaching facilities
  • St Wilfrid’s RC College: the major refurbishment and extension of a 1950’s school
  • South Shields Community High School: a new build 2-storey secondary school, built around a central atrium
  • St Joseph’s RC School: the extension of an existing secondary school
  • Mortimer Community College: the extension of a 1,100 place secondary school
  • Hebburn Comprehensive School: the refurbishment and extension of an existing secondary school
  • Constructing Excellence Awards, Value, Winner
  • PPF Awards (2009), Best Public Sector Project Team, Winner
  • PPF Awards (2009), Best Education Project, Winner

Ealing BSF

Full engineering design services for two sample schools at Dormers Wells and Cardinal Wiseman in the London Borough of Ealing. Only the two samples schools are being built, as part of the original £350million BSF programme.
