Renowned as a centre for carpet manufacturing, this site was rejuvenated with the conversion of the former weaving mill into a new department store and hotel. Cundall was appointed to provide building services, structural and civil engineering for the conversion of the listed building into a Debenhams department store and a hotel.
The building was extended with the addition of 2-storey wings on each side of the mill to resemble a ‘glass box’ in order to meet planning requirements. The new department store and the extension wings achieve a total 3,100m² retail area. The hotel created on the upper three floors includes a new roof space mezzanine floor to provide up to 70 rooms.
The existing town centre of Shrewsbury suffers from having three disconnected and neglected shopping centres in close proximity.
The historic market town of Newbury in Berkshire is to be transformed with a new vibrant ‘streetscape’ retail-led mixed-use town centre scheme. The town and its residents will shortly benefit from a new development of retail stores, supplemented by nearly 200 residential units.
