Shenley Academy is a new 9,500m² school building located on the site of an existing school in the outskirts of Birmingham. The old school comprised of older 1950’s and 60’s accommodation that is in poor condition.
Cundall have been involved with Lend Lease and ECA Studios since the outset of the scheme to advise on services and environmental issues and help develop the concepts for the redevelopment of the site. This has included for sustainability and renewable technologies advice, as well as acoustic and fire engineering consultancy services.
The new building design has been carefully coordinated from the outset to provide an effective natural ventilation design that exceeds by a large margin availability to each teaching space, combined with daylight linked and dimmed lighting systems. The core to this design philosophy are four vertical service risers, acting also as thermal chimneys, with large penthouse louvres at roof level for the discharging of warm stale air. These thermal chimneys provide back of room ventilation to south facing classrooms and other single elevation rooms.
The scheme was eligible for the DSCF’s carbon reduction funding, and Cundall developed an energy and renewable strategy that was tailored to suit the scheme. This will include for a wood pellet biomass boiler, low energy lighting, and lighting controls. The building services engineering is an integral part of the building, incorporating energy screens, a plantroom viewing gallery, and student web access to the BEMS and weather data.
Aston Engineering Academy is a new 6,500m² facility in the heart of Birmingham which is dedicated to engineering disciplines. Its principle sponsor is Aston University, located a few blocks away.
Excelsior Academy is a new-build academy, located in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne. The academy site was previously local authority housing, recently cleared. This project represents one of the largest Academy projects undertaken in the UK to date.
Completed in 2011, Barnfield West Academy and Barnfield South Academy are new flagship institutions that are part of Luton’s BSF programme. The academies were designed to accommodate 1250 pupils and 200 staff and have achieved an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) ratings of 'A'.
