Cundall provided a comprehensive multi-disciplinary service for the design of the new world headquarters for Sage Software, located in Newcastle Great Park. The project included building services engineering, structural engineering and civil engineering, as well as providing advice on traffic, decorative lighting and transportation.

The £57m Phase 1 of the development provided 32,000m2 of highly serviced modern office accommodation, comprising six blocks around a central glazed atrium. In order to meet the changing needs of the occupants, the building services were designed to provide maximum flexibility, e.g. to allow internal partitions to be erected at 1.8m anywhere on the floor plates without the need for major disruption to the engineering services.

Sustainability and energy efficiency were important considerations from the outset and the development was one of the first in the North East to comply with Part L (2002). Conditions within the office space are now controlled using passive chilled beams that are integrated in the suspended ceiling system. Exhaust air from the offices recirculates through the atrium to assist in maintaining comfortable conditions in this space. Standby generation and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were incorporated in the design to provide the security of electricity supply required by a major IT organisation.

Cundall prepared a Transportation Assessment (TA) for the new Sage offices in Newcastle Great Park (NGP). Because of the sensitivity of the area, significant work on providing facilities for sustainable development was necessary and the TA needed to fit with the TA for NGP. The project involved undertaking a staff travel mode survey and developing a Travel Plan to support assumptions on future travel mode share. Detail design of cycling facilities within the site was also required as part of the Travel Plan.
