Opened in 2011, the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne is based on ‘state of the art’ ideas developed by the Hospital around a family-centred care model that puts children and their parents at the centre of the facility.
Cundall provided sustainability advice throughout the masterplanning and feasibility process and a site next to the existing hospital in Royal Park was selected. Cundall then prepared the sustainability component of the PPP brief, incorporating evidence-based design that recognised the importance and value of nature in the healing process. In addition to stringent energy, carbon and water targets, we also established requirements for excellent indoor environment quality and ensuring patients, siblings, parents and staff had access to the views across Royal Park.
Throughout the design and construction of the new hospital by The Children's Health Partnership, Cundall acted as technical advisor to the government. (The Partnership is a consortium consisting of International Public Partnerships as equity holders, Bovis Lendlease as builder, Spotless Group as facilities manager and architects Billard Leece, Bates Smart and HKS.)
