Cundall provided Ravenswood School for Girls with expert sustainability advice over a number of years. Our contribution - in carrying out an ESD audit of the existing school site, and in recommending ways of improving the efficiency of the school - meant that Cundall was appointed as ESD consultant for the new $20m Madel Fidler Building.
The new building provides a new entrance and centre for learning, acting as the central hub. It includes a student resource centre, areas for studying, meetings and relaxation, a café, new classrooms and seminar spaces and designated staff areas.
The building combines passive and active design solutions. Designed as a mixed-mode building, it is able to operate completely with natural ventilation and can be air conditioned in extreme weather conditions. It also features a double-skin façade that creates a cavity, which is kept closed in the winter months to retain heat and opens automatically in the summer to release heat.
The sustainability features double up as an educational tool to educate students on carbon emissions. Touch screens are provided to allow students to track the building’s performance and better understand how it operates.
