Pumpherston & Uphall Station Community Primary School is a primary school with community facilities that is located within a wider development area. It replaced two existing schools within the catchment area and is the first of its kind to be funded by the Scottish Futures Trust. Due to its renewable features and sustainable design the new Pumpherston and Uphall Station Community School has achieved an impressive EPC rating of B+.

Cundall’s first involvement in the project began with assisting West Lothian Council with detailed site analysis of two potential sites for the school, and each had its own unique and challenging features.  These included derelict mine workings, poor ground conditions, existing below ground and overhead services, a historic landfill site, Japanese knotweed and the presence of protected great crested newts. Cundall’s structural approach was to adopt a steel framed solution for the building to maximise clear spans and provide future flexibility.

Cundall approached the project with sustainability in mind. Some of the initiatives were:

  • A robust natural ventilation system. This natural ventilation design negates the requirement for fresh air mechanical ventilation to nearly all rooms resulting in significant energy and carbon savings
  • The main source of heating is from a low-carbon ground source heat pump system. This system is expected to save more than 6.5 tonnes per year of CO2 emissions when compared against a gas heating system
  • A roof-mounted solar panel system will provide approximately 17% of the annual domestic hot water load. The solar system is expected to save over 2 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year
