The £60 million investment into one of the UK’s largest post-war social housing schemes will allow the regeneration of the Pennywell estate in Sunderland. The development is to be completed in a number of phases to provide more than 600 new homes of more than 20 different property sizes and types.
Cundall was appointed to perform civil, transportation and geotechnical services on this project. The phased approach to the development called for early consideration of both highway and service routes to ensure protected zones were included within the masterplanning exercise. In order to improve access to the development, a connection to an existing dual carriageway was made. It forms an important transport corridor, linking the A19 to Sunderland city centre. Public transport requirements, future aspirations of Sunderland City Council and the location of existing high-voltage cables and other services informed the final design solution.
