Park Hill Estate in Sheffield is a Grade II* listed internationally recognised development. The original structure built between 1957 and 1961 reflects the brutalist architecture of that period.

The refurbishment of this iconic landmark is being completed in phases, with phase 1 completed in 2017 and Phase 2 shortly starting construction. Cundall has worked on Phase 3 of the development.

Phase 3 will include 356 student bedrooms, extensive student communal facilities as well as commercial space on the ground floor of the building.The original concrete structure is being retained which posed challenges for our building services team. The design had to comply with the existing builders work shaft whilst significantly improving the quality of the building for future occupants.

To adhere to the client’s brief the historic nature of the development has been retained but a range of measures resulting in high-quality, energy and resource efficient student accommodation have been identified.

The vertical transportation team surveyed the existing single and twin passenger lifts in the development, which had been out of use for 10 years.

After measuring the existing lift shafts and conducting traffic analysis based on the proposed student population, the team were able to advise the client on the most appropriate lifts for optimum user accessibility.

The vertical cluster layout of the building resulted in maisonette student rooms meaning the lifts only service alternative floors. One 17-person lift is proposed as the main passenger lift servicing the block. In addition, the team advised a smaller passenger lift at the opposite end of the block. This lift provides convenience for users and a contingency if the larger lift was to fail during periods of maintenance or breakdown of the larger lift.
