Cundall provided multi-disciplinary services at Monklands Hospital including refurbishment of the existing operating theatre suites and development of the new Intensive Care Unit. Working in a live hospital environment, with a key client requirement to keep six of the seven theatres up-and-running at any one time to maintain the existing theatre capacity, meant that detailed consideration had to be given to the phasing.
The complete replacement of all infrastructure to support the theatres was accomplished by a complex plant and distribution installation strategy with one of the particularly challenging aspects being the need to find a new location for all of the 7no. new packaged air handling units (AHUs).
We developed a thorough understanding of the existing structure and thinking “out of the box” developed a scheme that allowed the new building services installation to be installed. The creative solution for the location of the AHUs was a steelwork roof-top deck which respected the idiosyncrasies of the existing 1970s construction below and caused minimal intrusion and disruption in the theatre suite below.
An enabling package of works saw the AHUs connected to the necessary infrastructure. As each theatre or clinical space was refurbished, this freed up space within the existing plantroom that was utilised for the new electrical switchgear and UPS / IPS systems.
Once complete the existing plantroom was substantially cleared, freeing up valuable space for alternative use.
The centre conceived as one “combined” building that would provide facilities for a range of primary care, community care and diagnostic services at a single location.
