The new academy in South Middlesbrough comprises approximately 12,000m2 of teaching and ancillary space. It was constructed in the grounds of an existing school, which remained operational throughout the contract period.

The design took full advantage of passive measures with natural stack ventilation and cross ventilation of the classrooms and daylighting via clerestory glazing on the upper floor.

Thermal modelling was undertaken on the performance of natural ventilation to the IT classrooms, which demonstrated that with the addition of some low power assisted fans, the DX cooling system could be deleted.

Flexibility was inherent in the design of the ICT & AV infrastructure, with the building being provided with a comprehensive ICT & AV wiring installation throughout.

The structure was steel framed with the use of Metsec to form the internal coat of the external walls. This allowed first fix activities to commence 8 weeks earlier than originally planned and contributed to the completion of the Academy only 18 months after the appointment of the design team.
