The Children’s Hospital is the largest Design & Construction building project to date from the Architectural Service Department of HKSAR, when measured by contract sum. This is also the first specialist Children’s Hospital in Hong Kong.

Cundall is part of the design and build project team which has won the tender stage design competition and has been appointed to provide sustainability and BEAM consultancy services during the contract stage of the project.

The project has set ambitious sustainability targets to provide world-class healthcare facilities in the region and is targeting BEAM Plus certification. In parallel, Cundall has introduced many cutting edge technologies that will not only maximise environmental performance but also improve the patients’ experience.

  • The building form has adopted a “twin tower” design to enable win to pass through the development. Open courtyards and atrium will facilitate air movement around the site. The proposed development as extensive green landscape achieving 40% of green ratio to reduce heat island effect. In addition, more than 50% of the roof is covered by high sola reflective materials to further reduce heat island effect.
  • For air quality, the project has achieved 30% more fresh air than ASHRAE62.1 provision. The air-conditioning system can also operate “full fresh air” free cooling for areas suitable to do so. Internally, the hospital generally has high performance filters to further air quality.
  • For daylight, the building form is in H-shape to enable all wards to have daylight and view access. With two large atrium in the middle of towers, daylight can be distributed to inner space of the building to maximise daylight access.

The project has achieved BEAM Plus Platinum Provisional Assessment rating under BEAM Plus version 1.2, which is first hospital in Hong Kong has achieved this rating.
