High Speed Two (HS2) is the company responsible for promoting the UK’s new high speed rail network, connecting both London and Leeds to the West Midlands. The new headquarters, located in Two Snow Hill, opened in 2016 and will employ over 1,000 people.
Having provided the detailed design for the Two Snow Hill development, Cundall was the obvious choice to design the fit out for HS2’s headquarters. The team provided building services and sustainable design to this 100,000ft2 (9,290m2) office fit-out, spanning 4 floors.
Cundall provided added value throughout the detailed design process, including assisting Willmott Dixon and Briggs and Forrester to secure the project at bid stage.
At RIBA design stages E and F, Cundall was appointed by building services subcontractor Briggs and Forrester, where the team utilised our designers and drafters to co-ordinate the services with the existing structure and proposed architectural fit-out.
Despite the very heavily-serviced nature of this landmark Birmingham office building, the design solutions resulted in a very energy efficient scheme, achieving an EPC B rating. This was made possible by the selection and integration of efficient technologies and controls such as variable speed pumping, integral air source heat pumps, energy efficient lighting with daylight linking and absence detection controls, as well as a small CHP plant to meet the building electrical and domestic hot water baseload.
Birmingham City Council leader, John Clancy, labelled the High Speed two (HS2) rail network as a “game-changer” for the city and one that will “supercharge Birmingham”.
