Part of Gateshead Council’s Building an Active Future Programme, this new build leisure centre has been constructed adjacent to an existing school and provides both school and community use. The new complex boasts a Flowrider, the North East's first indoor surfing facility and only the third currently in the UK.
The centre also has a four lane 25 metre pool, a gym and a dance studio.
The structure includes curved glulam timber beams to form a double curved roof. All the concrete pool tanks are designed to water-retaining standards. The building utilises both biomass boilers and combined heating and power unit to reduce carbon emissions and the running costs for the centre.
Increased membership and club usage of the town’s sports facility has resulted from the creation of a state of the art leisure centre and sports stadium. A pool and changing village were added to the existing building, which dated from the 1950’s.
The Arc Leisure Matlock (formerly known as Central Area Leisure Centre, CALC) scheme provides an innovative and exciting new regional sport and leisure facility for local people and visitors to the Peak District.
The centre began as two separate projects, a leisure centre and a primary care centre (PCC) that involved two clients, two architects with Cundall being the common denominator providing multidisciplinary services for both.
Cundall's engineering consultancy services cover the entire life cycle of any building project. Clients find our ‘total solutions’ approach saves them time, money and effort.
