Cundall is providing sustainable design and LEED consultancy on the Health Innovation Building (HIB) in the University of South Australia’s new Health and Biomedical Precinct. An iconic and technically complex building, the HIB represents a unique opportunity for the university to establish a world class facility that is at the forefront of international pharmacy and cancer research and allied health education.

With a budget of $247.3m and approximate GFA of 28,000m² the building is being designed and constructed to target a certified LEED® Gold rating, reflecting the university’s commitment to sustainability in its largest ever capital project. The Health Innovation Building will bring together and grow a collaboration of students educators, researchers and the public in an innovative context to enable knowledge creation and transfer and will bring in to being new applications for health, pharmacy and cancer research.

Cundall’s role as LEED consultant has been to coordinate with the relevant design disciplines to deliver:

  • Sustainable site strategy – providing end of trip facilities, incorporating water sensitive urban design features such as waterwise landscaping, rain gardens and promoting use of alternative forms of transport.
  • Water efficiency – installing high efficiency hydraulic fixtures including a 30kL rainwater storage tank for landscaping irrigation.
  • Energy efficiency – achieving a minimum 10% energy improvement over similar facilities, to be verified in operation through implementation of an energy measurement and verification plan. Specific initiatives include energy efficient HVAC plant, energy efficient lighting and solar hot water systems.
  • Materials and resources – minimum 75% of construction waste to be diverted from landfill, maximising use of locally sourced materials and providing easily accessible and dedicated recycling waste storage areas.
  • Indoor environment quality – using low VOC adhesives and sealants, paints and floor coverings, providing access to natural daylight and external views and ensuring HVAC design provides for thermal comfort.
