Hartford Hall is a Grade II listed building. In 1998, the new owners wanted to renovate the Hall and outbuildings and convert them back to residential use, initially with the addition of 47 new-build properties. This concept is called 'enabling development'; it effectively overrides certain restrictive planning policies and allows the restoration exercise to be subsidised by the new development.
Cundall's planning and civil engineering teams were among those who offered professional advice throughout the project. Our civil engineers successfully designed the most difficult section of the new estate road, which affected a heavily wooded area and a steeply incised river valley. Our planning department provided strong planning input, especially during the formative stages, and immediately post approval, when the site was at its most vulnerable. The success of the overall scheme is explained by having an acute awareness and appreciation of all the factors which contribute toward Hartford Hall's appeal. It was important to appreciate the quality of the environment, the ecology and the landscape setting of the site, not just the heritage buildings themselves.
