This project involved the enhancement of teaching and learning facilities at three existing Harris Academy sites in South London - Peckham, Crystal Palace and Merton. The newly formed Harris Boys Academy in Peckham will replace a former school, which will provide a new building, playground and excellent facilities and equipment.
Each of the Harris Academy sites has posed its own unique engineering challenges, for which Cundall helped to provide expert solutions. Ensuring the ability to construct within fully operational school sites, safety was of paramount importance. The sites are all located in semi-urban residential neighbourhoods, so heavy lorry-based site activities and noise had to be carefully controlled.
The new buildings were designed to take full advantage of passive measures, with natural stack or forced ventilation providing cross-ventilation of the classrooms. The maximisation of glazing provides natural lighting to enhance the learning environment without compromising the potential for the resulting heat gain in the space.
Flexibility is inherent in the Cundall design solutions. We incorporated the ability to change the internal layout and designated uses in the future, without impacting on the ICT & AV infrastructure within the building.
Light4 completed the lighting design and analysis required for the planning stage and later on for the internal entrance and atrium lighting. For the planning stage Light4 undertook overshadowing analysis to ensure the new 4-storey school would not reduce access to daylight for the surrounding residential properties. Light4 also undertook a light pollution study to demonstrate the external lighting design would not contribute to sky glow or to spill light to the surrounding residential properties.
Internally Light4 designed the entrance and atrium lighting design. The lighting is integrated into the architectural details as much as possible to give the tall atrium a clutter free appearance. Externally in addition to the functional car park lighting, Light4 designed the vertical glass fin lighting which provides a subtle but unique façade effect for the school.
