The 2,300m2 studio breathes new life into a former light industrial warehouse. It integrates innovative and sustainable workplace design to create an energetic and creative new space accommodating a team of 150 with room to grow. A team of project managers and designers were formed to undertake this fit-out project for HASSELL’s new studio in Shanghai. Cundall was appointed as the building services (MEP), sustainability and LEED consultant for this project.

HASSELL is an international design practice with 14 studios globally. The interdisciplinary firm combines expertise in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning with integrated sustainability and urban design capabilities.

The objective of the sustainable interior design seeks to harness the openness of the building and  to maximise natural daylight, space and views. It utilises the use of the existing building structure and fabric to minimise the use of additional materials and to reduce construction waste. Bamboo is used extensively throughout the fit-out in place of timber, providing a sustainable building material as well as a strong cultural connection.

Natural daylight was maximised through glass panels in the roof, whilst the lighting is designed with low power density and smart sensors that is adjusted according to zones, timing, and motion detection. The studio also uses very efficient active HVAC systems; the use of VRF AC coupled with an innovative waste heat rejection for hot water generation to ensure maximum efficiency for energy use.

Water-use reduction strategies included the use of bamboo as native landscape to reduce irrigation demand and low flow water fittings and fixtures.

The intention to obtain LEED certification was clear from the beginning of this project. Key members from the design and construction team participated regularly and enthusiastically to make sure LEED 'Gold' rating is achieved.
