The Green Wall at Two Snowhill is Europe’s largest ‘living’ wall, stretching 220m x 7m and includes a total of 604 square metres of plants. It is a striking piece of illuminated living architecture. The wall hides the multi-storey car park and provides a back drop for the future tram network.
Cundall's lighting design team was employed to develop the concept to meet the clients aspirations of creating a prominently lit landscape element which brought a ‘wow factor’ to the Snowhill area.
Using 100% LED products, the lighting concept for illuminating the Green Wall was to provide a two layer approach, distinguishing the different materials and textures. Continuous linear uplighting was used to wash the Green Wall sections, delivering a uniform wash of light across the living wall. Spot uplighters were specified to highlight the architectural mesh panel sections. The concept for the spot uplights involved an animated control system. This allowed the spot lights to be adjusted in intensity and colour to create a wave effect across the surface of the mesh panels.
The lighting concept was developed following discussions with the client, local planners and local tram operators to ensure the scheme had their buy-in and met the brief of all parties involved. The final lighting proposal was presented to Cheshire Shakeshaft Limited (CSL) and the architect Hyland Edgar Driver, which was approved and developed to Royal Institute British Architects stage D+ Standard. This provided the client with secure costs for the installation and wiring details for the controls system.
