The Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle is the main site for Durham University Sport and it was selected to appear in London Organising Committee Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.

Cundall provided multi-disciplinary services for the 1600m2 extension to the centre, incorporating an indoor powered rowing tank, fencing stiles, ergo area, offices/staff room, dance studio, a new main entrance and changing rooms with a plunge pool. The rowing tank is the third to be constructed in the UK and will enable the Durham rowing team to train throughout the year regardless of the conditions of the River Wear.

A new boat house and a boat launch deck to the River Wear will also be constructed as part of the development scheme. As the site was prone to flooding, the boat house design incorporated flood resilient measures. In addition, slope stability analysis and detailed design mitigated environmental concerns such as flooding and pollution.

Other facilities include:

  • the only world-class standard fencing specific facility in the country with four competition and four practice dedicated fencing pistes and wheelchair fencing frames
  • an extended sports hall allowing for increased indoor cricket provision with a variety of practice surfaces and a range of bowling machines
  • a performance analysis suite so athletes can monitor and improve their technique
  • three dedicated physiotherapy treatment rooms
  • a multi-purpose dance studio and x-bike training room
  • a rowing ergo gallery housing 28 stations, each used to simulate the action of watercraft rowing
