One of three refurbishment leisure centre projects for Gateshead Council under the Building and Active Future Programme, Gateshead Leisure Centre has been developed from Shipcote Baths constructed in 1944 , the dry sports leisure centre extension added in the 1980’s, resulting in a centre which was disjointed and did not flow. The client wanted a centre that was easy to navigate and welcoming for new visitors, the leisure centre and swimming pool have undergone a full refurbishment and re-planning of internal accommodation to provide a more integrated centre.
A light and airy centre was created with a central street running throughout the building by the removal of a number of floor slabs which opened up the centre. The centre now incorportes a 25m pool, two learner pools, large fitness room, dance studios, children’s activity spaces, 4-court and 8 court sports halls, a squash court, wet and dry changing facilities, staff accommodation, crèche and a large entrance hall and café.
The building has been awarded a Very Good BREEAM rating.
Headline sustainable features include:
Initial plans for the Swimming Pool area of the centre was to demolish and rebuild as the Pool tank was 69 years old. This was avoided by repairing the concrete including relining the pools’ wall and installing cathodic protection system. The innovative cathoidic protection also increases the life of the pool tank by significantly reducing the corrosion process.
The Arc Leisure Matlock (formerly known as Central Area Leisure Centre, CALC) scheme provides an innovative and exciting new regional sport and leisure facility for local people and visitors to the Peak District.
The centre began as two separate projects, a leisure centre and a primary care centre (PCC) that involved two clients, two architects with Cundall being the common denominator providing multidisciplinary services for both.
A 1600m2 extension and refurbishment of the to the existing University sports building to provide students, staff and the general public, including schools and community groups, with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports at all levels of ability, including elite training and performance coaching.
