Cundall was awarded the engineering and design contract for the second phase of Facebook’s new European energy efficient data centre campus in Luleå, Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle. The data centre, Facebook’s first outside of the United States, includes the fit-out of two mega data halls (Halls C and D in building 1). Facebook looked at several sites across Europe, and picked Luleå for the availability of cheaper 'green' electricity and its cold climate, which supports abundant 'free cooling'. The move will see Facebook become faster for users across Europe.
The winning team led by Cundall includes Swedish engineering partner ÅF Group and architects Gensler.
Cundall’s Critical System team is a leader in the design of air optimised data centres and the Practice will be drawing on its multi-disciplinary and specialist capabilities to offer all engineering disciplines.
Cundall was selected for their proactive approach and their experience with low energy 'free cooling' systems. The massive data centre at Luleå is similar to Facebook facilities that were opened in Prineville, Oregon, in April 2011 and Forest City, North Carolina, in April 2012. Luleå is a town with a population of 74,000 that is situated at the same latitude as Fairbanks, Alaska.
The facility will process data from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It will cover 30,000 square metres, the equivalent of around 11 football pitches. Construction has already begun on the building shell and the fit-out of the first two data halls; the facility is scheduled to come online in 2013.
Applying our skills and approach to data centres has placed Cundall at the forefront of efficient and sustainable data centre design, which was a key factor in being selected by Facebook to deliver their next generation of ultra-efficient data centres in Europe.
Cascade Creative Media recently posted this video showing what construction work is taking place at Facebook's Luleå data centre. The footage was shot in October 2012.
Malcolm Howe was named Business Leader of the Year at the Data Centre Dynamics Awards.
Cundall's Critical Systems team have recently hosted a breakfast discussion on the latest data centre cooling techniques and their effectiveness.
