The new Engineering Science Building includes classrooms, laboratories, offices, meeting rooms and an auditorium. The building is long and narrow across two floors. Due to the long length of the building, the structure was sub-divided into three segments via expansion joints.

Cundall’s structural team peer reviewed this project and identified a number of material savings which not only reduced construction cost allowing this project to be commercially viable but also significantly improved its sustainable credentials.

Improvements to the design included:

  • Reducing thickness of hollow core slabs
  • Reducing size of columns and wall thicknesses
  • Reducing thickness of foundations
  • Adopting appropriate loading criteria

The value engineering exercise by Cundall’s structural team made the project feasible and able to proceed with construction. In addition, the project was also able to achieve sustainability accreditation.
